4 Step Problem Solving
  • Sara bought two pairs of shoes. The regular

How much did Sara pay for one pair of shoes at
regular price and one pair at half price?
Regular 108 1 pair regular 1 pair half of
regular bought 2 pairs of shoes
To find the cost of shoes when they are half
price, I multiplied the regular price of 108 by
½. This gave me a cost of 54. To find the cost
for both pairs of shoes, I added 108 and 54 for
a total cost of 162.
Sara paid 162 for one pair of shoes at regular
price and one pair at half price.

David and his brother are going to the movies.
The price of the ticket is 7.50 per person.
They buy 2 drinks that cost 2.75 each. How much
money did they spend at the movies?
7.50 per ticket 2 tickets 2.75 per drink 2
drinks
How much money did they spend?
Since each ticket is 7.50, and they buy 2
tickets, I multiplied 7.50 by 2. This gave a
total ticket cost of 15. I multiplied 2.75 by
2 to get the cost for 2 drinks. I added the
total ticket cost and the total drink together
for the total amount of money spent.
David and his brother spent 20.50 in all.

all 81 of its home games?
How many people would attend all 81 games?
Stadium holds 48,325 people Sold out 81 games
To find out how many people would attend all 81
games, I multiplied 48,325 times 81 and got a
product of 3,914,325.
48325 x 81 48325
3866000 3,914,325
A total of 3,914,325 people would attend all 81
games.

How many tablespoons of butter will Amanda need
for 96 brownies?
3 tablespoons butter for every 12 brownies Wants
to make 96 brownies
I set up a proportion for 3tbsp of butter for
every 12 brownies. I then multiplied by a scale
factor of 12 to get an equivalent fraction of
24/96.
3 tbsp butter 12 brownies
Amanda will use 24 tablespoons of butter to make
96 brownies.

meters. If Courtney is between Rachel and Kevin,
what is the distance from Kevin to Courtney?
How many meters are between Kevin and Courtney?
6.43 m between Rachel Courtney 12.9m between
Kevin Courtney Courtney is between Rachel
Kevin
I drew a picture to see the location of each
person. Since there is 12.9 meters between Rachel
and Kevin, and Courtney is between them, I
subtracted the distance between Rachel and
Courtney from the distance between Rachel and
Kevin.
There are 6.47 meters between Kevin and Courtney.
