Title: Poem Response Choices

1
Poem Response Choices
  • What is a Found Poem, a Blackout Poem, a Free
Verse Poem, and an Acrostic Poem?

2
Poetic Form - The Found Poem
  • A found poem uses language discovered in a
non-poetic context and turns it into poetry.
  • Found poems take existing texts and refashion
them, reorder them, and present them as poems.
  • The literary equivalent of a collage, found
poetry is often made from newspaper articles,
street signs, graffiti, speeches, letters, or
    even other poems.

How can I create a FOUND poem?
  • Choose text directly from either a literary work
or another genre. Create a poem from the text.
For example, the death scene in Romeo and Juliet
could be condensed to something like
  • A perfect plot, Not perfectly executed, Fooled
the lovesick Romeo, Poison to ease his pain,
Caused hers. No gain. A Tale of Woe.

9
Free Verse Poetry
  • Free verse is one of the simplest, and yet most
difficult, type of poetry to write.
  • While it doesnt constrict the poet with rules
about form, it requires him or her to work hard
at creating a piece that is beautiful and
meaningful without any specific guidelines about
    rhyme and meter.

Free Verse Poetry
  • Carefully chosen words can help you create a poem
that sounds like the situation, emotion, or
object you are trying to portray.
  • For instance, short words with sharp consonants
cause the reader to stop-and- go in a choppy
cadence Cut, bash, stop, kick, lick, bite,
    punch, jump, stick.

  • Free Verse Example
  • Thrill Ride
  • Up. Up.Click, click.Wind blowssharp in my
ears.My heart jumps. Skips. Its up. Its up
    higher.
  • Its up, up the highest.Hands grasp at the
    clouds.
  • Then a forever pause. Still. Waiting.
  • Finally. Whoosh!Steep dropdown,down,down.
