• Muslims in Spain were called the Moors
• Region of culture, education, commerce
• Jews lived safely there
• Ferdinand and Isabella conquer ituse Catholicism
  to unite Spain

Growth of Towns and Commerce

• Europe is developing modern towns and commerce
• No longer was everything self sufficient through
  the manor system-manorialism
• Guilds formed to control the quality and price of
  certain goods
• All artisans formed guilds
• Wrights, coopers, smiths, tailors
• Origin of many surnames!

• Commerce and crafts were professional options
• Offered portable wealth in times of persecution

• International relations are not too hot
