their lives to religion and followed common
    rules.
  • Living apart from society-The monks did not get
into society. They were isolated from it.

  • Friars- They were just like monks but they were
    involved with society.
  • Living within society- The Friars lived within
    society.

Universities are built
  • Thomas Aquinas- He wrote and reasoned argument
for the existence of God. He also developed a
    philosophical system called natural law.
  • Created by religious leaders- Scholars wanted to
establish a connection between religious faith
    and intellectual reason.
  • Students took tests then and now- one similarity
to todays testing and then is that it is very
important because it can shape the future of
    your life.

The Church and the Arts
9
Religious Architecture
  • Inspired by religious expression- Their
    architecture was about representing their
    religious leaders.

10
Summary
  • As you can see the Europeans were really focused
on their religious beliefs. This allowed them to
build architecture that represented their Gods.

11
Magma Carta causes change in England
12
Magna Carta
  • Who demanded this agreement-The people of England
wanted this change in government. They wanted
this because their king was putting people in
    jail for no good reasons.

13
Effects of the Magna Carta
  • What were the effects of the M/C-The document
then on made the king have to tell them why they
were going to jail and they now had a right to a
    fair trial.
  • Three demands-1 state why being put in jail.
  • 2 They have a right to a fair trial.
  • 3 To respect their rights.
  • These were important because these allowed them
to have more rights and to be more respected.

14
Changes after the Magna Carta
  • What did the M/C inspire the noble to do-The
nobles would now be the ones telling the advice
    to kings.
  • Parliament-The parliament was the lawmaking body
that governs England. This was their government.
  • How did the king limit the M/C- Different events
changed the M/C by war and other big events.

15
Student Magna Carta
  • 1. We should have the right to choose what we do
    in class.
  • 2. We should be able to not have to do homework
    because home is for relaxing.
  • 3. We should also have a say so when we have
lunch so we can get what we want.

16
100 Year War
17
The course of war
  • The course was they tried to keep the king from
trying to get too much power over France. The
French king died and had no heirs. The England
king wanted to rule France. But the French didnt
want this to happen. So they went to war.
  • English would go ahead and stop.
  • Joan of Ark- Joan of Ark was a women who helped
    the French win the war.

18
Results of the War
  • Changes in England happened when they lost the
war and they kept their king.
  • France on the other hand won the war and they got
a new king so they would be the better country.
  • Democracy will have to wait because they won they
would now have a king so they didnt need a
different government. If they lost then they
would need to use democracy but they didnt need
    it.

19
The Black Death
20
Where it came from
  • The Black Death came from rats and fleas. The
traders accidentally brought rats and fleas that
had the disease. The plague originated from
    central and eastern Asia.

21
How it spread
  • The Black Death spreads by rats and fleas.
Traders carried these rats to the Mediterranean
trade ports. Then the disease got on other boats
and infected the people in the country that they
    went to.

22
What disease was it?
  • The actual disease was called the bubonic plague.
They just called it the Black Death because it
was one of the most horrible disease spreads ever.

23
Effect on manor life and feudalism/How many died
  • The effects it had was that since many people
died the peasants had job opportunities. Now the
peasants would have a better life not working for
    the rich.
  • How many people died-The Black Death killed a
third of Europe's population. In other words the
plague killed nearly 25 MILLION people!!!!!

24
What happened to it?
  • The Black Death immediately stopped when they
started cleaning up in the year 1351. This was a
relief to the Europeans because it killed so many
    people died.
