Integumentary System

• A system that is made up of parts that cover and
  protect the body
• Skin
• Hair
• Nails

Skin

• Epidermis
• The thin, outtermost layer of the skin
• Contains no blood vessels

• Dermis
• The layer beneath the epidermis.
• A thick layer
• Contains hair follicles, sweat glands, oil glands
  and nerves

Helps protect other body parts from injury and
infection. Helps maintain body temp.

Skin

• If you become too hot, sweat glands produce
  perspiration that cools you.
• Produces melanin a pigment that provides skin
  color and protects from UV rays
• Oil glands keep hair from getting dry and
  brittle and skin from drying out.

Hair

• Hardened, dead cells.
• Roots are living cells deep in dermis

Nails

• Made up of dead cells.

Caring for the Integumentary System

• Clean skin and Scalp
• Treat dandruff
• Select foods containing Vitamin A
• Check moles and freckles regularly

• Wear Sunscreen of at least SPF 15
• Read directions when using makeup
• Seek proper care for skin rashes
