Why should we care?
  • Sexually active youth aged 15-24 have the highest
    STD rates of any group
  • By age 25, half of all sexually active young
    people will become infected with an STD
  • US has the highest rate of STDs in the
    industrialized world (19 million new infections
    per year) and 50 are among youth ages
  • 15-24
  • Young women, youth of color, young men who have
    sex with men and incarcerated youth are at higher
    risk

Why should we care?
  • Untreated STDs can have detrimental consequences
    on the public health system
  • They can lead to infertility, pregnancy
    complications, birth defects, cervical cancer,
    and Pelvic Inflammatory Disease (PID)
  • They increase the risk of HIV transmission (3-5
    times)
  • Medical costs of STDs alone are nearly 8.4
    billion per year

  • Have fewer skills and are less prepared to learn
    when they enter kindergarten
  • Have behavioral problems and chronic medical
    conditions
  • Rely more heavily on publicly funded health care
  • Be incarcerated at some time during adolescence
  • Drop out of high school

  • Be unemployed or underemployed as a young adult
