Function (30.5)

• Function of the respiratory system
• Exchanges carbon dioxide with oxygen from the
  environment
• Provides oxygen for cells to function
• Removes the waste product of carbon dioxide from
  the body

Organs Involved (30.5)

• The nose- air enters through the nose.
• Pharynx- the tube used for breathing.
• Trachea- the tube that allows airflow.
• The lungs- holds oxygen and sends it to the rest
  of the body.

Sequence of breathing

• You breathe through your nose and into your
  lungs.
• Your lungs expand.
• Oxygen travels through the lungs and into
  arteries and the oxygen travels through your
  body.
• Then you exhale and the carbon dioxide travels
  out your body.

• Causes fatal diseases like can cancer in the
  respiratory tracks and in the kidneys
• Increases risk of lung cancer
• Causes Ischaemic Heart Disease

• Asthma- lungs air passages narrow restriction
  airflow and making it hard to breathe.
• Cystic fibrosis- the lungs and pancreas are
  blocked with mucus.
• Bronchitis- is an inflammation of the air
  passages within the your lungs.
