Title: respiratory system

1
List as many car parts as you can think of
Each of these parts has a specific function,
but they must work together for the car to move.
Pick two car parts and describe how they might
work together for the car to function properly.
Today we will be exploring how several
different body systems function in the body. We
will specifically be talking about our
Respiratory system and continue through the week
with the rest of them .

What does the Respiratory System Do?
  • When you breathe in, your body gets oxygen. When
you breathe out, you breathe out carbon dioxide-
waste from the body. This is called the gas
    exchange .
  • Respiratory systems allows us to move oxygen into
body tissues and remove carbon dioxide from
    cells.

4
The Bottom Line...
The Respiratory System... 1. Provides Oxygen
2. Removes Carbon Dioxide
5
Most of you will probably say it is the need to
take in oxygen, but your need to get rid of
carbon dioxide is even greater. The buildup of
this toxic product in your blood becomes more
dangerous more quickly than the lack of oxygen.
How long can YOU hold your breath before you have
to breathe?

Lets try this Count and write down in your
journal how many breaths per minute your partner
takes after completing various activities such
as Resting Walking Jump roping for two
minutes Running up the stairs Hopping on one foot
for two minutes Doing sit ups or push ups for two
minutes Record data in the science journal.

  • Take 1 BIG breath.
  • 2) Exhale into the balloon. Make sure to only
    exhale once into the balloon.
  • 3) Pinch the end of the balloon.
  • 4) Have your partner measure the circumference of
the balloon (in cm) using the method your teacher
    showed you.
  • 5) Record this measurement in your data table.
  • 6) With your partner do 5 jumping jacks.
  • 7) Quickly exhale one breath into the balloon.
  • 8) Pinch the end of the balloon.
  • 9) Again have your partner measure the
    circumference of the balloon.
  • Record this measurement in your data table.
  • 10) Repeat steps 6-9 (increasing the amount of
jumping jacks you do) until your data table is
full. Important Do not rest between each set
    of jumping jacks

Moving air in and out
  • During inspiration (inhalation), the diaphragm
    contracts.
  • During exhalation, these muscles relax. The
    diaphragm domes upwards.

Stig Severinsen held his breath for 22min 00sec
at the London School of Diving, United Kingdom,
on the 3rd of May 2012.
He did this by using advanced breathing
techniques prior to his attempt.
Since then, others have posted longer times and
have broken through the 23 minute barrier.

Cardiorespiratory System
  • The cardiovascular system and Respiratory system
    are best friends!
  • They work together to get the oxygen from the air

The BLUE vessels carry carbon dioxide
filled blood (deoxygenated blood) to the alveoli.
The RED vessels carry oxygen filled blood
(oxygenated blood) away from the alveoli.

Your respiratory system is a group of organs that
work together to take oxygen into your body and
get rid of carbon dioxide. Your body can complete
this process by both breathing and respiration.
Breathing is the physical process of inhaling and
exhaling. Respiration is the process by which a
body gets and uses oxygen and releases carbon
dioxide and water. This process is very
important because your body needs oxygen in order
to get energy from the foods you eat. When you
breathe in air, your lungs are the pair of organs
in your chest that inflate and deflate as air
gets sucked into and pushed out of your body by
your diaphragm. Your lung capacity is the total
amount of air your lungs can hold at one time.
Lung capacity is different for people depending
on their age, height, weight, and their physical
fitness. Today you will be doing an experiment to
test the instant effects of exercise on your lung
capacity.

larynx voice-box, helps produce sound trachea
referred to as the windpipe structure in which
air moves through to the rest of the respiratory
system bronchi passageway for air into the
lungs bronchiole narrow passageway that brochi
branch off into no cartilage is present
here alveoli specialized areas for gas exchange
within the lungs diaphragm muscle located
inferior to lungs forms the floor of the
thoracic cavity and is necessary for proper
breathing movement
