Title: The Marine Biome

1
The Marine Biome
  • Its Deep...

2
The Marine Biome
  • The largest of all the Biomes
  • More than (gt) 70 of the Earths surface is
covered in water. Only 3 is fresh.
  • Ice 2 Lakes, Rivers and Atmosphere 1
  • Average depth is 3800 meters
  • About 2.4 miles
  • Deepest is 11,045 meters
  • Mariana Trench

3
The Marine Biome
  • The Marine Biome is broken into two major groups
    of zones.
  • The Benthic Zones
  • Underwater Land
  • The Pelagic Zones
  • The Water columns

4
The Benthic Zones
  • Underwater Land
  • Continental Shelf zone.
  • Also the edge, slope and rise zones
  • Bathyal zone
  • Between 200 and 2,000 m (660 - 6,600 feet) below
    the surface.
  • Abyssal zone
  • Dark ocean region 2,0006,000 m(6,500 - 19,500
    feet) deep

5
The Benthic Zones
  • Hadal zone
  • The deepest region of the oceans (greater than gt
    6,000 m)
  • The French meaning is "house of the dead".
  • The Trenches
  • Mariana Trench
  • The deepest known is at 10,911 m.(6.8 miles)

The Pelagic Zones
  • The Water columns
  • The Neritic zones
  • Above the Continental Shelf to the Shore
  • The Oceanic zones
  • Everywhere else

Prepare yourself...
  • You need to write a staggering 23 words for the
    next three slides!

11
The Pelagic Zones
  • The oceanic pelagic region is divided into three
    sunlight zones.
  • The top zone is the euphotic or sunlit zone. This
is the ocean zone that sunlight penetrates.
  • Down to about 660 feet

12
The Pelagic Zones
  • The pelagic region is divided into three sunlight
    zones.
  • The next zone is the dysphotic or twilight zone.
Some sunlight reaches this zone, but not enough
    for photosynthesis to occur.
  • Down to about 3,300 feet.

13
The Pelagic Zones
  • The pelagic region is divided into three sunlight
    zones.
  • The last zone is the aphotic or midnight zone.
  • No light, pure saturating darkness.down to the
very pit of the festering abyss.
  • Bwaa Haaa Haaa Haaa!

And now..
  • Something completely different!
  • With 31 and a words.

16
Estuaries
  • An estuary is a partially enclosed body of water
where incoming seawater is mixed with fresh water
    coming from the land.
  • Like a salt marshfor example..
  • And what is good about a salt marsh?
  • CD

17
Estuaries
  • A Water Filtration System
  • River sediment (and pollution) trapped.
  • Flood Storm Control
  • Hugely absorptive of water..buffer for swells and
    tides
  • Extremely productive.
  • CD of Meerwald
