Title: Chemistry
1Chemistry
- Presented by
- Anita Schulek and Ann Cioffi
2Chemistry
- The study of the materials (chemicals) that make
up all of the things on our planet. - Chemistry will show how these substances combine,
such as how they react with each other and the
properties of each chemical.
3Challenge
- The challenge you are about to explore is all
about chemistry, chemical reactions and classes
of matter. - You will perform some experiments, observe
chemical changes and even design a product by
selecting the chemicals that go into it.
4Warm-UpChemical Reaction-Removing Oxidation
Have you ever noticed what happens to a shiny new
copper penny over time? It becomes dull and
changes color to dark brown.
5This change in the physical properties of the
penny is caused by oxidation. A chemical
reaction takes place and the copper changes
color.
In the warm-Up activity that follows we will use
chemicals to change and old penny back into its
shiny self.
6Proceed to the Warm-Up
- We will create a chemical reaction
- that will remove the oxidation on the copper
penny.
7Warm-Up Magic Mud
- Creating a colloidal suspension
8Sometimes changes may be physical
- Material shape
- Color
- Hardness
- Texture
9Reactions can change the chemical property
- You would not eat a chunk of sodium.
- You would not want to inhale chlorine gas, its
very poisonous. - Combine the two elements and a chemical change
takes place creating sodium chloride or salt.
10Phase
- Combining chemicals may also change the phase or
state of a material. - Matter can be found in solid, liquid and gaseous
states.
11Solids Liquids
- Solids maintain their shape
- Liquids flow and take on the shape of their
container.
Gases
- Gases are substances that have no shape
12Activity
- In the activity that follows, you will combine
materials to create a colloidal suspension. - A suspension takes place when small particles are
suspended in the liquid but do not dissolve.
13Magic Mud
- Has the properties of a solid and a liquid at the
same time
14Warm-UpSlime
- All materials are made up of atoms joined
together. - When two or more atoms bond together a molecule
is formed.
15Chemical Polymer
- In the warm-up activity you will create a
chemical polymer. - Polymers are substance that are made up of
monomers. - A monomer is a small molecule that likes to bond
together with other monomers forming a long chain
of molecules connected together.
16- These long chains of molecules are polymers.
17Design Challenge
18Chemists
- Its all about combining the chemicals that will
produce a material with the properties you
desire. - Whole Milk
- 1 Milk
- Cream
19Ice Cream is an Emulsion
- An emulsion is formed when liquid droplets are
suspended in another liquid, like the way oil and
water mix.
20Ice Cream is also Foam
- A foam is created when gas molecules like air is
mixed in a liquid.
21Ice Cream is Emulsion Foam
- Ice cream is emulsion foam that has been frozen
to create a crystalline structure.
22Toppings
- Each chemist will create a unique
- ice cream.
