Inha University
  • Unit 3
  • Public Health Sleep

2
  • In todays class we are going to look at how
    sleep disorders affect people.

3
  • One of my favorite sleep disorders is sleep
    paralysis.
  • In Korean it is known as Gawee Nulim.

4
  • The scientific explanation of sleep paralysis is
    simple
  • (1) Your brain goes into REM sleep.
  • (2) Your body chemically shuts down your muscles
so that you dont move while you are dreaming.
  • (3) You wake up in the middle of an REM cycle
and your muscle and brains are still
    disconnected.

5
  • Simple enough.
  • But whats interesting is that most people who
experience this feel an evil presence in the room
    when this happens.
  • Many people in fact claim to see a dark shape
    behind them when it happens.
  • Nobody ever reports a positive feeling or
    presence when this happens.

6
  • In cultures all around the world, people
attribute this dark presence to be a demon, ghost
or evil spirit that presses on a persons chest
    and steals their breath.
  • In Korea, for example, its a ghost.
  • In Turkey, its a Djinni.
  • In Eastern Canada its an old hag (evil witch).

7
  • In hundreds of cultures around the world people
    report spirits, demons, creatures, goblins,
succubi and ghosts sitting on people and
    strangling them.

  • In particular. we are going to look at some basic
structures that can be used for much of the

  • Last class, I asked you to write a summary
paragraph on the characteristics of happy people.

14
Topic
  • The lecturer discusses the common
    characteristics of happy people.
  • Psychologists have examined the characteristics
    of happy people.
  • The lecture covered the characteristics of happy
    people.

15
Supporting Sentence Details
  • One important characteristic of happy people is
family and friends. Studies have shown that
happy people tend to have strong connections with
family and friends and make time to spend with
    them.

16
Supporting Sentence Details
  • Another characteristic of happy people is
religious beliefs. Believing in something bigger
than themselves helps people find meaning in
    their lives.

17
Supporting Sentence Details
  • Setting goals is a third characteristic of happy
people. Happy people tend to establish goals for
themselves in their work and personal lives
around things that are interesting or use their
    strengths.

18
Supporting Sentence Details
  • Surprisingly, having lots of money is not a
characteristic of happy people. As long as
someone has enough money to provide the
essentials for life, having more money did not
    bring extra happiness.

19
Supporting Sentence Details
  • High education is also not a characteristic of
happy people. Studies have shown that people with
low education are just as happy as people with
    high education.

20
Supporting Sentence Details
  • Finally, youth is another feature that was not a
characteristic of happy people. In fact,
research has shown just the opposite, that people
aged 60-64 years old tended to be happier than
    people aged 20-24.

21
  • In short, there are characteristics of happy
people that can be identified, but they are not
always the characteristics that you might guess.
