Why Did England Colonize America?

• England did not have enough land or resources to
  support its growing population.
• Some English citizens wanted religious freedom.
• The country waffled back and forth between
  Catholicism Protestantism
• England wanted to find valuable resources in the
  New World to send back home
• Mercantilism

France in the New World

• King Francis I of France sends Giovanni Verrazano
  to explore the New World
• Comes ashore near Cape Fear, NC (possibly as far
  south as Ga or Fla)
• Sailed up coastline to Nova Scotia then back to
  France
• France lays claim to lands in the New World
  including the Southeast

The Hugenots

• 1562
• Jean Riboult (Ree-bow) 150 French Hugenots
  French Protestants land on Floridas coast and
  sail northward looking for a place to settle
• Protected inlet north of present-day Savannah
• French name it Port Royal and build Charles Fort
• 1st European fort on North American soil
  abandoned due to famine and other hardships

Spain reacts to French settlments

• 1565
• In response to the French Huguenots actions, the
  Spanish send Pedro Menendez a large army to
  (1)Force out the French and (2)Colonize Florida
• Menendez and the soldiers launch a surprise
  attack on Fort Caroline and execute the Huguenots
• Spain establishes St. Augustine, Florida which is
  their 1st successful settlement on North American
  soil
