What is a Conjunction?

• Word that joins words or word groups
• There are 2 different types

Coordinating Conjunction

• Join word or word groups that are used in the
  same way.
• Examples
• Fred or Cali (joins 2 nouns)
• Strict but fair (joins 2 adjectives)
• Over the river and through the woods (joins 2
  prepositional phrases)
• Ms. Basone gave the test, yet she did not grade
  the papers. (joins 2 independent clauses)
• Almost always are preceded by a comma when
  joining 2 independent clauses

Correlative Conjunction

• Pairs of conjunctions that join words or word
  groups that are used in the same way
• Examples
• Both Mr. Bloomfield and Ms. Basone dominated the
  middle school volleyball competition. (the pair
  joins 2 nouns)
• He looked neither to the left or to the right.
  (the pair joins 2 prepositional phrases)
• Not only did Mr. Patterson go to the Tennessee
  game, but he also thought they were going to win.
  (the pair joins 2 independent clauses)
• Notice the comma before the second pair of
  conjunctions.
