Earliest South Asian Art
  • From the Indus Valley civilization
  • Found tiny figures of people and animals that
    probably had religious importance
  • Later Indian art showed these influences in
    carvings

4
Stupas
  • Buddhism emerged as the dominant religion early
    in the continents history.
  • During the reign of Asoka (265238 BC), the arts
were supported and he had builders construct tall
columns inscribed with messages praising peace
    and nonviolence.

5
Stupas continued
  • He also ordered the building of STUPAS,
    dome-shaped burial mounds
  • The stupas housed remains of the Buddha or other
holy person and became sacred sites visited by
    pilgrims.

6
  • Like most religious art, each feature of the
    stupa has symbolic meaning
  • The dome stands for heaven
  • On top of the dome is a square structure that
    represents the world
  • Above the square is an umbrella, the symbol of
    royalty
  • The railing and gateways that surround stupas
have intricate carvings on them of royalty, daily
    life, and scenes from stories.

Temples
  • Both Buddhists and Hindus carved huge temples
    into hillsides
  • The Buddhists cave temple at Karli, built around
A.D. 50, has a vast hall that is 124 feet long
    and almost 50 feet high.

14
  • At Ellora, Hindu workers built an immense temple
96 feet high by chiseling from the top of a hill
    down its base

15
Sculpture
  • Sculptors decorated every inch of temples with
    rich carvings
  • Through carvings, people learned Hindu stories
    and traditions
  • Indian artists united Buddhist and Hindu themes.
EX a Hindu temple carving might include the
lotus flower, a symbol of the Buddha
  • At first Buddhists artists did not show the
Buddha as a human figure, but as symbols such as
    the sacred tree
