The Effect of Setting
  • Review of Setting time and place a story takes
    place.
  • But, setting does more
  • Setting can affect characters, conflict, mood
(storys atmosphere), and tone (authors attitude
toward the subject, characters, conflict, etc.).
  • Ex. In Hatchet, the setting of a remote
wilderness affects the main character (Brian) by
helping in the transformation of the old Brian
to the new Brian. The setting helps to isolate
his character, taking him away from problems at
home such as his parents divorce. In turn, this
betters his character by making him more
    thoughtful, skilled, responsible, and mature.
  • Ex. In Hatchet, the setting of a remote
wilderness affects the conflict of the story by
providing animals that compete with Brian for
food (bear, skunk), which Brian needs to survive.
In addition, because the setting lacks other
humans and quick fix materials (ex. lighter),
Brian is also forced to survive on his own and
    with limited resources.
  • Your writing assignment how does the setting of
Hatchet affect the tone of the story? Use
    examples to support your answer.
