Background Information

• Ulysses S. Grant was born on April 27, 1822 in
  Point Pleasant, Ohio.
• Graduate of United States Military Academy at
  West Point, NY.
• Grant was appointed as a Brevet 2nd Lieutenant in
  the 4th US Infantry stationed in St. Louis ,
  Missouri.
• In August 1853 promoted to title of captain.
• Grant was appointed Lieutenant General of the
  Union army in March 1864.

Role During the Civil War

• Grant was the Lieutenant General of the Union
  army from 1864 to 1865.
• In February 1862 he took Fort Henry and attacked
  Fort Donelson.
• Won the Battle of Vicksburg through skillful
  tactics.
• Fought a war of attrition against Robert E. Lee.
• Forced Lee to surrender at Appomattox Court House.
