How did writers become involved?

• They brought attention to the corruption in
  business and government
• They wrote about the bad things going on in
  newspapers, magazines and books

• They brought attention to the corruption
• Named for a character who spent time sweeping the
  muck or dirt off of the floor
• Most famous muckrakers were Jacob Riis and Upton
  Sinclair

Presidential Reforms Roosevelt

• Passed laws to clean up the cities
• Passed law to make factories safer
• Controlled some of the railroad
• Took big business to court

• Took more business to court
• Passed a federal income tax (16th amendment)
• Allowed for senators to be elected by the people
  (17th amendment)

• Lowered taxes
• Graduated income tax (make more pay more, make
  less pay less)
• Protected unions and their workers
• Started the Federal Reserve
• Known for not treating African Americans fairly

Fight for Equality/Social Changes

• Women- Right to vote in 1920, 19th amendment
• African Americans- NAACP (National Association
  for the Advancement of Colored People)
• 18th Amendment- Illegal to sell or transport
  alcohol in the United States
