When Pol Pot took over
  • Pol Pot became the ruler of Cambodia in 1976, and
    was in power until 1979.
  • He tried to convert Cambodia in to a communist
    peasant farming society.

4
Khmer Rouge(Red Cambodians)
  • When Pol Pot became the leader of the Cambodian
communist party, he was forced to flee in to the
jungle to escape the anger of Prince Norodom
    Sihanouk, the leader of Cambodia.
  • While he was in the jungle, Pol Pot formed a
group called the Khmer Rouge to follow his lead
and wage war on the Sihanouks government. This
is how Pol Pot took over and started the
    genocide.

5
How did it begin?
  • Cambodia had a very unstable government, and in
1975, Pol Pot came in with a strong military and
    easily took over Cambodia.
  • If the government was stronger and more stable,
Pol Pot wouldnt have taken over Cambodia so
    easily.

6
The People of Cambodia
  • Overall, 2 3 million people (25 30 of the
population) died during the genocide from
    starvation, execution and forced labor.
  • When they were forced to evacuate the cities, the
residence were told that the reason for the
evacuation was because the U.S. was planning to
    bomb them.

7
The Government
  • The Khmer Rouge killed anyone that was involved
in the former government of Cambodia, including
civil servants, military officers, and police
that were involved in the Khmer Republic in
    particular.
  • Some refugees and others in danger, dyed their
clothes black to blend in with peasants and
working class people who were not in danger.
  • In the city of Phnom Penh, the Khmer Rouge
brought 300 officers in to the forest and machine
gunned and clubbed them to death.

8
How did it End?
  • In 1979, there was an internal split with the
remaining Khmer Rouge members, which then led to
    Pol Pots arrest.
  • He later died of natural causes which ended the
Khmer Rouge for good because their power was
    gone.
  • After the genocide, Cambodia was left under the
    Vietnamese occupation for ten years.
  • Today, Cambodia is back to normal
