Title: NT 501 Greek II Session 13

1
NT 501Greek II- Session 13
  • Using the texts of Dr. Bill Mounce

2
mi verbs
  • So far, we have dealt with verbs from the
    thematic conjugation
  • These verbs use a thematic vowel- we call it a
connecting vowel- these are the w verbs
  • Another type of conjugation is the athematic
conjugation- we normally call these mi verbs

3
Four classes of mi verbs
  • mi verbs are classified by their stem vowels
  • o-class
  • a-class
  • e-class
  • u-class

4
mi verbs- rules
  • 1. mi verbs replicate their initial stem letter
to form the present and separate the reduplicated
    consonant with an iota
  • You must memorize the root of a mi verb along
    with its lexical form
  • Reduplication takes place only in 1st principal
    part

5
mi verbs- rules
  • 2. mi verbs do not ordinarily use a connecting
(i.e. thematic) vowel in the indicative.
  • The personal ending is added directly to the stem
  • A connecting vowel is, however, used in the
    imperfect singular and the future

6
mi verbs- rules
  • 3. mi verbs employ three different personal
    endings in the present active
  • (see chart 34.8 on 322.)
  • The present active is the only place where mi
    verbs use different endings

7
mi verbs- rules
  • 4. The stem vowel of a mi verb can lengthen,
    shorten, or drop out (ablaut)
  • Again, knowing the stem will eliminate a lot of
    guess work on this point

8
mi verbs- rules
  • 5. Most of the mi verbs use ka as their tense
    formative in the aorist.
  • These are called kappa aorists.
  • See paradigm 34.11 on 324.
