3
TYPE 1 DIABETES
Type 1 diabetes, also called insulin-dependent
diabetes mellitus, is an auto immune disease in
which the body destroys insulin producing cells.
As a result, the body cannot effectively store
and use glucose (sugar) as an energy source.
People with type 1 diabetes must inject
themselves with synthetic insulin 1 to 4 times a
day.
4
TYPE 2 DIABETES
In type 2 diabetes, also known as adult-onset
diabetes, the body can still produce insulin, but
its ineffective. Thus the body, like with type 1
diabetes, cannot effectively store and use
glucose as an energy source. Insulin injections
are not required.
5
How Do You Get Diabetes?
  • Heredity
  • Viral infection
  • Being overweight

6
Who's at Risk?
  • Type 1 Diabetes
  • Children or teens who have a genetic
    predisposition to diabetes
  • Exposure to viral infection
  • Type 2 Diabetes
  • People of all ages who are overweight
  • Adults who have some genetic predisposition to
    diabetes

7
Symptoms of Diabetes
  • Extreme Thirst
  • Constant Urination
  • High Blood Glucose Level
  • Constant Hunger
  • Fatigue

8
Treatment of Diabetes
  • Daily insulin injections
  • Diet
  • Exercise
  • Oral Hypoglycemic drugs

9
Equipment Required to Maintain
Good Diabetes Control
  • Glucometer
  • Insulin
  • Syringes
  • Glucose Tablets/Juice Box

10
Alternate Treatments
  • Type 2 None other than those already
    mentioned
  • Type 1 Insulin Pump Therapy

11
What is an Insulin Pump?
An insulin pump is a portable device that injects
insulin at programmed intervals in order to
regulate blood sugar levels. No needles
necessary!!
12
How the Pump Works
  • A little piece of plastic or canula is inserted
with a needle underneath the skin
  • The needle is removed and a piece of protective
tape is placed over the infusion set
  • Pump and Canula are then primed and are ready
    for use
