• CMIP5 does not attempt to coordinate all the
  climate modeling activities essential to our
  community.
• CMIPs primary focus Provide hindcasts and
  projections that advance understanding of climate
  and climate change and contribute to the IPCC AR5
  process WGs 1, 2, and 3
• Focus
• Evaluate how realistic the models are in
  simulating the recent past
• Provide projections of future climate change and
  evaluate the roles of
• Forcing
• Initial state (of ocean)
• Identify and understand the major uncertainties
  in model projections Why when models are forced
  similarly do they respond differently?

CMIP5 targets two different time-frames of equal
interest

• Near-term
• Decadal predictions, initialized from observed
  ocean states
• Exploratory research expt.
• Boer and Murphy proposed a non-contentious set of
  expts.
• Also Time-slice atmosphere-only expts. driven
  by SSTs from projections by coupled AOGCMs.
• Could provide down-scaled results at high
  resolution
• Possibly including more complete treatment of
  atmospheric chemistry
• Long-term
• Includes a core set of experiments expected to be
  performed by all groups.
• Augmented by additional experiments of
  exceptional interest.
