UK Clinical Research Collaboration

• A partnership of (20) organisations working with
  key stakeholders to effect change in UK clinical
  RD.

National Institute for Health Research

• An integrated set of funding schemes, systems and
  structures established by the Department of
  Health to implement the Governments health
  research strategy, Best Research for Best
  Health.

Best Research for Best Health

• Sets out five strategic goals in the five-year
  plan to create a health research system in which
  the NHS supports outstanding individuals, working
  in world-class facilities, conducting
  leading-edge research focusing on the needs of
  patients and the public
• 1. Establish the NHS as an internationally
  recognised centre of research excellence (NIHR
  framework).
• 2. Attract, develop and retain the best research
  professionals to conduct people-based research.
• 3. Commission research focused on improving
  health and social care.
• 4. Manage our knowledge resources (includes IT).
• 5. Act as sound custodians of public money for
  public good.

UK Clinical Research Network (UKCRN)

• Aims to develop UK-wide infrastructure embedded
  within the NHS to support high quality research
  across all areas of health and clinical need
  funded by both commercial and non-commercial
  funders
• Benefits health care, both by improving the
  processes of care and by providing new evidence
  for better care
• Supports excellence and innovation in clinical
  research
• Closer working between the NHS and industry,
  generating national wealth

Comprehensive Clinical Research Network (CCRN)
purposes

• Extends CRN to cover all of England and all
  healthcare topics
• To facilitate access to NHS patients and research
  facilities for NIHR CRN clinical research
• To streamline research management processes,
  reducing the burden on researchers, whilst
  maintaining highest standards
• To provide NHS infrastructure through the
  allocation and management of funding for NHS
  service support, including clinicians time, and
  additional NHS clinical services
• To signpost investigators to support in
  developing and carrying out high quality clinical
  research

NIHR CRN Portfolio

• CRN funding can only be used to support studies
  on the NIHR portfolio
• National register of all eligible studies
• NIHR Portfolio in England eligibility defined
  by DH basic principle is open national
  competition and peer review
• Portfolios in Northern Ireland, Wales, Scotland
• UK-wide working within portfolios
• Includes multi centre and single centre studies
• Includes commercial and non-commercial studies
• Details of current portfolio available on UKCRN
  website (www.ukcrn.org.uk)

Comprehensive Local Research Networks (CLRNs)
structure

• Defined geographically (within SHA boundaries)
  and by constituent organisations (providers of
  NHS services)
• Each CLRN has a resident population of 2M
• Primary, secondary and tertiary care, and mental
  health
• Led by a Clinical Director (some Co-Directors),
  with a supporting management team Executive
  Group, Senior Manager, Lead RMG Manager,
  Industry Liaison Officer
• Network Board (all constituent organisations,
  with independent Chair)
• Host organisation
• Implementation April 2007 onwards
