  • Originally constructed as a seismic vessel the
    Maurice Ewing was acquired in 1989, modified, and
    outfitted to perform the tasks required of a
    general purpose research vessel. This includes
    hull mounted 3.5 and 12 khz transducers and an
    Atlas deep ocean multibeam swath bottom mapping
    system.
  • Over the side sampling capabilities include 15 MT
    SWL starboard and stern a-frames serving four
    winches carrying 10,000m of 9/16" 3x19, 0.680"
    coaxial cable, 0.322' CTD wire, or 1/4' 3x19
    wire.
  • The Maurice Ewing has extensive geophysical
    capabilities which include a Syntrak 480-24
    seismic recording system with a 6km hydrophone
    streamer cable and a 2000 psi, 20 air gun 8300
    cubic inch tuned sound source array as well as a
    portable high resolution system with 2 GI guns
    and an ITI streamer cable.

Scheduling process
  • UNOLS ship schedulers use ship time requests as
    starting point
  • Ships are scheduled on a Calendar Year basis
  • Preliminary schedules are created in the spring
    and posted to Web in August
  • Scheduling meetings in July and Sep. refine
    schedules to final form

  • Funded work is given a priority
  • NSF funds 60 of shiptime
  • NSF funding proposals must meet Feb deadline with
    decisions by July
  • Agencies with later funding decisions affect your
    ability to schedule work when needed
  • Make contact early and follow through
