IS 8040 PROJECT I
  • IPv4 vs. IPv6
  • By
  • Altug Ozdamar

2
INTRODUCTION
  • TCP/IP standard is the most commonly used
networking protocol all over the world.
  • This presentation will give you an idea about the
new IPv6 and the outcome of this new protocol.

3
IPv4
  • Combines the segment and node portions of the
network layer into a single hierarchical IP
    address.
  • 32bits long, represented as a sequence of four
    octets.
  • Octets are decimal representations of eight bit
    section of the address

4
IPv4
  • IPv4 Packet Layout

5
IPv4 Example
  • 01101110 11101010 00001001 11001010
  • 110 234 9 202
  • 110.234.9.202

6
IPv4 Address Classes
  • Class A- 255.0.0.0
  • Class B- 255.255.0.0
  • Class C- 255.255.255.0

7
Subnet Mask
  • The first X bits of an IP address represent the
segment address and the remaining (32-X) bits
    represent the node address.
  • Helps defining nodes and their places.
  • Defining segments helps routers to distinguish
    one destination network from another

8
Subnet Mask Cont.
  • 255.255.0.0
  • 11111111 00000000
  • Subnets254 Nodes254
  • 11111110 00000000
  • Subnets128 Nodes512

9
Problems with IPv4
  • Multicasting
  • Class of Service
  • Security
  • Not enough IP addresses

10
IPv6
  • The new trend for the Internet protocol.
  • Designed by the Internet Engineering Task Force.
  • 128-bit addressing.
  • Similar to Mac Addressing.

11
IPv6 Packet
  • Packet Layout

12
Example IPv6
  • Example of an IPv6 Address
  • FF0E00A0B9023
  • Example of an IPv6 Subnet Mask
  • FFFFFFFFFFFF000

13
Advantages of IPv6
  • Capability of assigning more addresses than the
    current population of the world.
  • Improved management- Devices detect their LAN
router and negotiate for an address
  • Utilizes Fixed Length field headers

14
Disadvantages
  • Service disruption
  • Performance degradation
  • Longer provisioning times
  • Most applications do not support IPv6
  • Not enough hardware

15
Conclusion
  • The internet is still using IPv4 instead of IPv6,
however the IPv4 has been around for a long time
(it was adopted in 1981) and is showing its age.
  • IPv6 is more than a need for the network users
    and managers.

16
Conclusion(cont.)
  • The advantages it brings to our life are more
important than the disadvantages it carries with.
  • Currently there are no other solutions to the
problems of IPv4. Thus, IPv6 should be
    implemented and supported faster.
