Partnerships Central
Facilitating, promoting and building the capacity
of partnerships for sustainable development

2Renewed focus on Partnerships
- Since the Rio Summit, cross-sector partnerships
have been gaining recognition as a practical
approach to the elusive goal of sustainable
development. - The World Summit for Sustainable Development in
2002 refocused attention on partnerships,
reiterating their utilization as an essential
implementation mechanism of development goals,
while showcasing 250 partnerships.
3Whats missing?
- No shortage of enthusiasm
- But, what has been missing is a clear route to
channel stakeholders good intentions into
concrete action. - Means, Motivation and Opportunity
4Whats needed?
- If sustainable development goals are to be
achieved through partnerships, hundreds of
thousands of actors, taking part on a voluntary,
commercial or mandatory basis, will require
information and services specifically tailored to
the distinctive needs of partnerships.
5Whats needed?
- A forum through which the enthusiasm, knowledge,
experience, connections and people necessary for
partnerships can crystallize - A central hub and starting point for partnerships
activity, linking out to and tying together
complementary initiatives - A mechanism to spread the lessons of (often
under-publicized) research, studies and success
stories to a mass audience through a
decentralizing network
6Whats needed?
- A channel to facilitate dialogue among all actors
and multiply innovative partnership solutions
through communication, knowledge-exchange and
dissemination of good practice - A method to link partnership achievements to
government commitments and development goals,
demonstrating policy in action - The ability to improve the efficiency and
transparency of information among donors, project
implementers and other resource providers - The means to facilitate the creation of new
partnerships.
