- Length of a garment - a hadith
- Abdur Rahman said "The Apostle of Allah (peace
be upon him) said The way for a believer to wear
a lower garment is to have it halfway down his
legs and he is guilty of no sin if it comes
halfway between that and the ankles, but what
comes lowerthan the ankles is in Hell on the day
of Resurrection. Allah will not look at him who
trails his lower garment conceitedly." - Book 32, Number 4082

oversized embroidered wool blend shawl.
28In parts of southern Iraq, the wearing of the
agal or head rope over the head
scarf Indicates tribal identity in the larger
tribal confederations of the mintifij and Bani
Huchaim. The main signal given by not wearing
the agal in Saudi Arabia and the Gulf States,
or by wearing it plainly falling down from
either side of the head to the chest, is that
one may be a mutawwa or person committed to the
dawah or propagation of Islam
29Or, in Iraq, people not wearing head the head
rope and wearing the head scarf folded back over
the head in a semi turban style would be thought
to be coastal or palm-cultivating Arabs of the
area of Shatt al-Arab.
30Within Saudi arabia however the absence of the
agal does not have this meaning, and there is a
tendency for people from the smaller town not to
wear it plainly.

37Clothing Identity
- clothing shows the social and occupational status
of people. - Married and unmarried women might wear different
clothing or head coverings. - Different ages wear different types of clothing.
- Clothing worn out in public would be very
different from clothing worn in the home
(especially for women). - An older man would have a beard while a younger
man might not. - clothing differs as to the situation one is in.
(i.e. clothing while doing farm work, compared to
clothing when going to a mosque.)

off their wealth. - Clothing should not attract attention or be worn
to show off. - Clothing must cover the entire body only the
hands and face may remain visible. - The material must not be so thin that one can see
through it. - Clothing must hang loose so that the shape of the
body is not shown off. - The woman's clothing must not resemble the man's
clothing, nor should the man's clothing resemble
the woman's. - Women should neither artificially lengthen their

43Clothing Identity
Qur'an and Hadith's influences on clothing
- A Muslim should not wear clothing to look like a
non-Muslim. (For example, the Persians were known
for wearing red, many silk robes, and their men's
robes had long trains which dragged behind them.
The Prophet Muhammad was against Muslims copying
these styles.) - Men's robes or shirts should extend down from
halfway below the shin but over the ankles, but
not so long as to trail behind on the ground. - While praying in a mosque, clothing should be
plain and not be distracting. - A man's hair might be criticized if it was
shoulder-length or longer. The Prophet Muhammad
preferred men to wear their hair neat and cut a
little below the ears.

Other influences on gender identity
MARCH 2005 Muslim dolls are created for small
children in order to rule out Barbie and her
wanton (anti-Muslim) appearance. Dolls created
to promote traditional values, with their modest
clothing and pro-family backgrounds.
46Politics Religion
- And say to the believing women that they should
lower their gaze and guard their modesty and
that they should not display their beauty and
ornaments except what must ordinarily appear
thereof that they should draw their veils over
their bosoms and not display their beauty except
to their husbands..." (Qur'an 2430-31)

48- An Iranian school girl is quoted as saying, We
want to stop men from treating us like sex
objects, as they have always done. We want them
to ignore our appearance and to be attentive to
our personalities and mind. We want them to take
us seriously and treat us as equals and not just
chase us around for our bodies and physical
looks (USC.edu).
