Insects
All insects are alike in certain ways. All
insects have six legs. They also all have three
main parts to their bodies. Most insects have
wings and a pair of feelers called antennae. All
insects start life as a small egg.-Brandon

Metamorphosis
Caterpillars grow and change into a butterfly or
moth. This change is called metamorphosis.-Makail

5
The Life Cycle
Butterflies look different from each other, but
all butterflies grow and change in the same way.
This is called a life cycle. It has four
stages.-Dalton
6
Stage 1 - The Egg
A butterfly starts its life as an egg. The mother
butterfly lays many eggs. Inside each egg is a
caterpillar. Eggs are laid in the spring or
summer.-Dakota
7
Stage 2 - The Larva
A caterpillar hatches from an egg. Its time to
eat. The caterpillar gobbles up leaves all
day.-Tyejah
8
Stage 3 - The Butterfly Pupa
The caterpillar grows a hard skin around itself.
The skin is called a chrysalis (say kris-uh-lis).
The caterpillar changes inside the chrysalis.
-LaJohn
9
Stage 3 - The Moth Pupa
The pupa stage is sometimes called the resting
stage because, in this stage, insects usually do
not move around. Moth larva make a cocoon spun
from their silken webs.-Jacob O.
10
Stage 4 - The Adult
Butterflies are insects. Both butterflies and
moths belong to the family of insects called
Lepidoptera.-John O.

Caterpillar Body Parts
12
Caterpillar Body Parts
A caterpillar has a head and thirteen body
segments, six true legs, eight prolegs, twelve
eyes and breathing holes called spiracles.-Jamia
13
Molting Its Skin
Caterpillars have a head, 23 body segments, 6
true legs and 8 to 10 false legs. Their mouths
are called mandibles.-Courtney

The Body of a Butterfly
A butterfly or moth has three main body parts.
They are the head, thorax and abdomen. They have
six legs, two antenna and wings.-Atmila
16
The Wings
The wing colors are made up of tiny little scales
a little bit like the scales on a fish. If you
touch a butterflys wings, some scales will come
off on your finger and you will be able to see
the color.-Tesla
17
Strange Facts
Butterflies find food with their eyes.
Butterflies and moths have compound eyes. Their
eyes are made up of hundreds of lenses. They can
see in all directions. They smell with their
antenna and taste with their front feet.-Wesley
18
The Mouth
All butterflies and moths that eat when they are
adults have a proboscis for a mouth. This is a
hollow tube used for sucking up nectar, water,
and other liquids. When not in use, the proboscis
is coiled up in front of the insects
head.-Jacob S.
19
What They Eat
Nectar is the sweet liquid produced by many
flowers and is the most common food of many moths
and butterflies. Some species eat the juice of
rotting fruit or tree sap.-John M.
20
Comparing Moths and Butterflies
How can you tell a moth from a butterfly? There
are three different ways. 1- A butterfly is
lighter colored than most moths. 2- Butterflies
fly in the day and moths fly at night. 3- Moths
have hairy antennae and butterflies have smooth
ones. Those are just some of the comparisons of a
butterfly and moth.-Grace

Kinds of Butterflies and Moths
Painted Lady Butterfly
Cabbage Butterfly
Swallowtail Butterfly
Luna Moth
Tiger Moth
22
Cabbage Butterfly
The body of the Cabbage Butterfly is all black
and all of the wings are white. There is a black
band at the tip of the top wing and a dot in the
center. In the center of the bottom wing is
another dot. It is 1.3-1.8 inches in width, and
1.5-2.0 inches in height. The butterfly is found
throughout North America. It eats cabbage,
broccoli, and cauliflower.-Aaron
23
Painted Lady Butterfly
The Painted Lady prefers nectar from plants 3-6
feet high. The butterfly lives almost everywhere
except in Australia and Antarctica. Painted Lady
butterflies have a wing span of 2-2 7/8 inches
(5.1- 7.3 cm). The wings are orange-brown and
dark brown.-Brianna
24
Swallowtail Butterfly
The swallowtail has two tails on its wings. These
tails look like the long wings of a bird called
the swallow. There are different kinds of
swallowtail butterflies. Some live in wet
marshes. Others live in dry fields. Swallowtails
live all over the world, except for the frozen
lands! -Michael
25
Tiger Moth
The Isabella Tiger Moths abdomen is brown and
yellow with black marks. The wings are brown and
yellow. The wingspan is 2 inches wide. Animals
will not eat the Tiger Moth because it is
poisonous. The woolly bear caterpillar is red,
brown and black on both ends on the spine. The
woolly bear caterpillars are actually the larva
of the Tiger Moth.-Bailey
26
Luna Moth
The Luna moth lives in North America and the
eastern U.S. The wings have long tails and the
color is greenish yellow. The Luna moth has a
wingspan of 4.5-5 inches and is one of the
largest moths in North America.-Amanda
