• The case before the court, US Postal Service vs.
  Gregory involves Maria Gregory, a letter carrier
  in Georgia. She was fired in 1997 because of her
  prior disciplinary record a letter of warning,
  a seven-day suspension, and a 14-day suspension.
  The US Postal Service says that past
  disciplinary actions taken cumulatively can
  support a more severe punishment
• In this case, the incident spurring the removal
  was that Gregory was accused of taking an hour
  more than it normally takes to finish delivering
  a letter.
• In the ruling, the court ruled that the firing
  must be reconsidered because Gregory in fact won
  the first of the grievances, resulting in the
  withdrawal of the warning letter.

• The arbitration case involved a provision in the
  workers contract that states the company cant
  lay off workers unless an external event forces
  such a move
• Verizon argued that structural changes in the
  telecommunications industry, increased
  competition, and a dwindling subscriber prompted
  layoffs.
• But the arbitrator ruled that factors Verizon
  cited didnt qualify as external events
• As a result, Verizon must reinstate more than
  2300 employees they have let go in last year
