Africans join up
  • After the issue of the Emancipation Proclamation,
    over 100,000 freed slaves joined to fight in the
    Union army.
  • Black regiments were formed, but not given the
    supplies or pay they needed.
  • African soldiers proved themselves in battle,
    even when they did not get all of the things they
    needed.

Ulysses S. Grant
  • Grant was chosen by Lincoln to lead the Union.
  • He refused terms of surrender and the U.S. in his
    name came to stand for Unconditional Surrender.
  • Grant led the armies in a siege at Vicksburg, MS.
    The confederate armies surrendered giving the
    Union control of the Mississippi River.

Gettysburg
  • In Pennsylvania, the battle of Gettysburg was won
    by the Union army.
  • Over 3000 Union soldiers and 4000 Confederate
    soldiers were killed. 20,000 men were wounded or
    missing.
  • The battle was a turning-point for the war.
  • Lincoln delivered his famous Gettysburg Address,
    inspiring Americans to continue fighting to keep

Shermans March to the Sea
  • As the Union gained power, William T. Sherman
    began leading his army south from Tennessee to
    Georgia.
  • He marched from Atlanta to Savannah and into the
    Carolinas leaving a path of destruction 60 miles
    wide and over 300 miles long.
  • Homes and stores were burned, crops were
    destroyed, and railroad lines blown-up. More on

Surrender at Appomattox Courthouse
  • On April 9th, 1865, Lee and Grant met in Virginia
    to sign a surrender.
  • Lee was trapped and could fight no further. He
    gave his surrender to Grant, ending the Civil
    War.
  • As other Southern generals heard the news, they
    too surrendered.

Lincolns Assassination
  • After the wars end, Lincoln attended a play at
    Fords Theater.
  • John Wilkes Booth shot the President and ran.
    Lincoln died one day later.
  • The South feared the next leader would not be
    fair. Many southerners and mourned Lincolns
    death.
