3What Happened
- During the Yalta Conference it was agreed that
the USSR would have its own sphere of influence
(the countries surrounding it) for protection.
However, the US was anti-communist and intended
to avoid the spread of communism to other
countries (that might be influenced to establish
a communist government by the USSR). -
4What Happened
- When elections were to be held in Greece,
British troops (later on with US assistance)
helped the right wing parties win in a civil war
against the left wing parties. Afterwards, they
established a monarchy and right-wing rule.
Although Britain and the US intended to fight
communism, they fought against the united
left-wing parties. Furthermore, they didnt allow
free elections as had been agreed in the Yalta
conference from fear of a rise of a communist
government in Greece. The purpose of all this was
to keep a last anti-communist front against
Russia.
5Greece, Turkey and the Soviet Union
6President Truman
- President Truman introduced and established the
Truman Doctrine, which became the new policy and
approach the US would have when dealing with
world issues.
7Ideological differences
- The Truman Doctrine clearly illustrates the
ideological differences between the US, which had
a government based on Liberalism and the USSR
which was communist President Truman 1947 I
believe that it must be the policy of the United
States to support free peoples who are resisting
attempted subjugation by armed minorities
meaning communists or by outside pressures
USSR (Walsh).
8The Shadow of Communism
- The US viewed the USSR as a threat to Liberalism
and the western democracies. Their fears of a
spread of communism would become reality if the
Truman doctrine and Marshall Plan were not
followed.
