• Mr. President, Mr. Speaker, Members of the
  Congress of the United States.The gravity of the
  situation which confronts the world today
  necessitates my appearance before a joint session
  of the Congress. The foreign policy and the
  national security of this country are
  involved.One aspect of the present situation,
  which I present to you at this time for your
  consideration and decision, concerns Greece and
  Turkey

Main Idea

• The Truman Doctrine is the common name for the
  Cold War strategy of containment versus the
  Soviet Union and the expansion of communism.

Point of View

• This doctrine was first promulgated by President
  Harry Truman in an address to the U.S. Congress
  on March 12, 1947.
• President Truman was supported by the Republican
  controlled congress.

Inferences/Outside Info.

• The situation was perceived as very important for
  American balance of power politics in the context
  of the cold war If Greece was lost, Turkey would
  become an untenable outpost in a sea of
  communism.
