Determining your General Purpose for Speaking

• All communication takes place for one of three
  reasons called General Purposes.
• Each General Purpose accomplishes a different
  speaking goal.

• The General Purposes for speaking are
• Persuade
• Inform
• Entertain

• Persuasive speakers
• Try to convince the audience to change their
  opinions so they are more like the speakers
  opinions.
• Only use arguments and facts from one side of the
  issue.

• Informative speakers
• Want to teach the audience something new.
• have no interest in changing opinions.
• Must determine how much the audience already
  knows about the speech topic to avoid giving a
  speech that will be confusing or boring.

• Entertainment
• The goal of an entertainment speech is to amuse
  the audience.
• Entertainment speakers have no interest in
  changing opinion or educating.
