fleet IATA Training and Qualification
Initiative (ITQI)
- Prepare a state of the industry report that
quantifies the problem identifies solutions.
First results - 20 mechanics in line base maintenance,
airframe, component, engine overhaul and support
functions, - Establish best practices for global
implementation of competency based qualification
requirements - Develop standards for new technology training
devices and e-learning - Develop global standards for training providers
- Define a new global standard for EM staff
selection for new and qualified personnel

- These data correspond to the figures published in
ATW October 2008 Mechanics Wanted - These data does not consider business / general
aviation - These data does not consider demand in aircraft /

8Manpower demand to maintain civil jet aircraft
fleet Source for future maintenance personnel
in Germany
- School levers
- Today, around 900 young German people start an
apprenticeship as aircraft mechanic / electrician
annually - 60 at the various OEM (incl. EADS), component
suppliers or Air Force - 30 at LHT in line and base maintenance and
engine / component overhaul - 10 at various smaller MRO companies
- Applicants already having a technical
qualification - Poaching personnel from competitors or other
industries which offer even less attractive
condition than the MRO industry - Unemployed people who worked for companies or
entire industries which are in bad shape due to
changes of economic conditions - Retired Air Force staff that were qualified to
work only on selected military fighter or
transport aircraft sections
9Manpower demand to maintain civil jet aircraft
fleet consequences of the current finance
crisis
- Analysts at JP Morgan and others assume that one
third of deliveries scheduled for next year can
not be financed - Surplus aircraft capacity in particular older,
maintenance intensive will be taken out of
service and parked - No additional manpower in maintenance will be
employed to support the remaining fleet - What did the industry learn from the last crisis
when the MROs did not employ new staff over 4
5 years? - At Lufthansa Technik we
- Always have a constant flow of apprentices to
cater for fluctuation - Created an employment service firm to provide
trained mechanics on a temporary basis for
various MRO tasks

11General Information
Manpower demand to maintain civil jet aircraft
fleet Are existing levels of maintenance staff
adequate for the job?
- Do we have strategies how to qualify
- our staff to
- detect damages
- perform proper repair
- qualify that repair meets requirements
