PC Health
  • By Shayne Evans

6
PC Health vs Car Health
  • New PCs could be considered something like a new
    car.

7
PC Health vs Car Health
  • A new car should run great! And so should a new
    PC.

8
PC Health vs Car Health
  • Over time we should do maintenance work to keep
our car and our PC as healthy as possible.

9
PC Health vs Car Health
  • With cars we change the oil, tires, and brakes,
    etc.
  • With PCs we clean outprograms and files thatwe
    no longer need.
  • Notice that this is more software related.

10
PC Health vs Car Health
  • Inevitably, both cars and PCs will grow out of
date and out of health. Parts will need to be
    replaced, etc.
  • And eventually, we will need to buysomething
    new.

Disclaimer
  • This presentation is about PCs running a
    Microsoft Windows operating system.
  • I have not owned a Mac and I do not know how to
    maintain them.
  • However, I have heard that Macs do not experience
as bad of a chronic slowdown as Windows PCs.

12
Disclaimer
  • More importantly, the maintenance tips I will
teach you are very helpful but if misused they
    could cause you more problems.
  • I encourage you to try to maintain your own PC,
but also to realize that there is some risk of
complications any time you are cleaning up a
    computer. Be cautious!

16
Running too many programs at once
  • Many modern PCs come with more software than the
    average consumer wants or needs
  • As we use our PCs we install many new pieces of
    software, sometimes unknowingly
  • Many programs may be running on your PC that you
    are not aware of

17
Running too many programs at once
  • To see a list of all the programs currently
running on your computer, press the following
three keys at the same time
  • ALT CTRL Delete
  • If you see a Windows Security dialog box, click
    Task Manager
  • Then click on the Processes tab if it is not
    selected.

18
Task Manager
  • Task Manager can show us many things about our
    computers performance
  • The Processes tab shows us all the processes, or
    running programs, on our computer.
  • As many as 20 of the processes running are
required and can not be stopped.
  • There are likely some processes running that are
not even visible in Task Manager.

19
Running too many programs at once
  • However, many of the programs we install sneakily
set themselves to run when we turn on our
    computer.
  • These programs might mean no harm, but ultimately
they add up and your computer slows down.
  • Malware, or malicious software, also adds up as
we use our PCs on the Internet.

20
More material to come!
  • Enjoy! ?
