  • Full spectrum of activities including
  • commerce, IT, workshops, PE, dance, catering,
  • hairdressing, music, horticulture, art, travel

Environmental Awareness
  • The Beginnings
  • Funding was made available through the ESF
  • Objective 4 - ADAPT (Waste and Energy
    Awareness programme)
  • College made local SMEs aware of waste and
    energy issues
  • Partner Organisation Greenwich Environmental
    Management Systems (GEMS) completed College
    Review in 1998
  • Three staff members attended a week long course
    run by the Chartered Institute of Environmental
    Health and were awarded their Certificate in
    Environmental Management after examination
  • Many members of College staff attended single
    day environmental awareness courses run by GEMS
    in Dundee
  • An environmental day was organised to give a
    higher profile to Environmental issues

  • The review was restricted to 3 full days in
    October and a lot of information was prepared for
    the review
  • Because of the size of the task the review
    concentrated on
  • Checking management information documentation
  • Interviews with key staff
  • Inspection of areas during review of documents

  • The Document Review inluded
  • The checking of the existing documented systems
  • Looking at the Colleges Strategic Plan
  • Considering the existing Environmental Policy
  • Checking Health and Safety Management
  • Looking at Energy Management

  • Checking Paper recycling activities
  • Enquiring on responsibilities

  • Redraft Environmental Policy
  • Instigate cross-departmental Environment Training
  • Formalise the existing informal arrangements for

Environmental Policy
  • Apply the principles of sustainable development
  • Meet all regulatory and legislative requirements
  • Invest in improving energy efficiency and energy
    conservation
  • Seek to minimise waste and maximise recycling and
    use of recycling materials
  • Seek suppliers and contractors who have high
    environmental standards
  • Strive to reduce the release of pollutants
  • Minimise health and risks to staff, students and
    the community
  • Provide appropriate environmental education and
    training to meet the needs and responsibilities
    of staff and students
  • Set annual targets for the reduction of
    environmental impact, monitor and report on
    achievement, and take corrective action as
    required.

Where We Are Now
  • The Environment Group has recently been
    reconvened after several months due retirals and
    overstretched resources
  • A yearly calendar of meetings has been set, the
    notes of which will be considered regularly by
    the College Board of Management
  • New Targets will be set early in the New Year
