Titian was an Venetian Painter, who was well
known for his use of color
Tiziano Vecellio is his true Italian name
Born in the Pieve de Cadore territory in Italy
throughout his career he was often known as Da
Cadore on account of where he was born.
No one knows the exact date of his birth

his father Gregorio Vecelli, was a successful
military man and superintendent of the castle of
Pieve De Cadore.
at age nine he and his brother were sent to live
and work in Venice, as apprentices under
Sebastian Succato
they then began to work and study under Giovanni
and Gentile Bellini, to very successful painters
at the time

Titian fell under the apprenticeship of
Giorgione, who worked primarily on frescoes.
Some say that a rivalry existed between the two
There work is so similar that is nearly
impossible to distinguish
During this time, he executed three frescoes in
the miracles of St. Anthony

Middle Years
Titian became increasingly popular
His work was eagerly sought after by the ducal
families of Ferrara, Mantua, and Urbino.
He became more mature, took on complicated
pieces and for the first time incorperated
monumental style

leaving him with their three kids
Philip ll and Charles V, were both eager to
purchase his work Charles V summoned him to
paint his portrait, and he was so impressed that
he made him a noble, Count Palatine (1533)

Titian in Rome
Titian traveled to Rome to work for the pope
(Pope Paul III) In Rome he contacted
Michelangelo and saw some of his work He was
influenced by Michelangelos paintings and the
glories of ancient Rome, that were still
standing Back home in Venice, he painted Christ
Crowned With Thorns which seemed to reflect what
he saw in Rome

Late Works
Titian was summoned by Charles and Phillip to do
more portraits He was heavily influenced by
Greek Mythology Perseus and Andromeda
Other famous portraits executed during this
time include, Adam Eve and
the Rape of Europa

Titian's Influence
Titian died from the plague raging in Venice, he
was the only victim to receive a church burial
Titian was well known for his composite
brushwork, craftsmanship and use of color
the color titian named after him
His work can be seen all over Europe (Louve) and
the United States
