• Pendleton Civil Service Act- Required people to
  take a test for government jobs.
• Direct Primary-voters rather than conventions
  choose which candidates to run for office.
• Referendum- a proposed law is submitted for vote
  by the people.

• A trust is the combination of business within a
  business industry.
• Sherman Antitrust Act-illegal for corporations to
  gain control of industries by forming trusts.

• First progressive president
• McKinley is shot 6 months into presidency, TR
  becomes president!
• Thought of Gov. as an umpire.
• Used Sherman Antitrust to break up trusts.
• Meat Inspection Act-because of Upton Sinclairs,
  The Jungle.

• Roosevelts hand picked successor
• Breaks up 2x as many trusts as Roosevelt.
• Later becomes a Chief Justice in the Supreme
  Court.

• Clayton Anti-trust Act- Companies cant buy stock
  in their competitors.
• More power for government to regulate trusts

• Controls the supply of money.

  a tax on the amount of money you earned!
• 17th-1913-Senators must directly elected by the
  voters, not by their friends.

  alcohol.
• Lower poverty, unemployment.
• 19th-Womens suffrage- Women earn the right to
  vote.
• During WWI-Women played large role in supporting
  the War.
