economy turned in a weak performance throughout
the 1990s. The modernization and integration of
the eastern German economy continues to be a
costly problem, with transfers from west to east
amounting to 70 billion. Germany's ageing
population, combined with high unemployment, has
pushed social security outlays to a level
exceeding contributions from workers. The
government expects growth to gain pace in the
second half of 2002, but to fall short of 1 for
the year again.

Economy Namibia is heavily dependant on the
mining of minerals (20 of the GPD). Over half
the population depends on agriculture for
livelihood. the majority of Namibia's people live
in pronounced poverty because of large-scale
unemployment.

Namibia was a German protectorate from 1884 until
1914 and was called "Deutsch Südwestafrika". The
German emperor sent the "Schutztruppe". This
military corps had the task of turning the area
between the Oranje and Kunene rivers into a
German colony. German settlers were supposed to
acquire land and cultivate it without hindrance.
In order to achieve this, the region's native
population, predominantly Namas and Hereros, had
to be subjugated.
In the first years, colonization progressed in a
more or less peaceful manner. Treaties were
negotiated - in whichever unfair manner - with
the representatives of the Namas and Hereros,
promising military protection to both groups. In
return, they agreed to tolerate the fact that
German settlers would take possession of their
land.
However, both the Hereros and the Namas finally
realized that German colonization threatened
their very existence. Both ethnic groups arose in
revolt. The military clashes with the Germans
lasted until 1908 and ended with the total
submission of the native population.

1884/85 The Conference of Berlin ("Congo
Conference") confirms Germanys right to
appropriate the territory
1805 The London Missionary Society establishes
itself in Blydverwacht
1806 The first mission station is erected in
Warmbad
1890 Imperial Germany declares its protectorate a
"Crown Colony".
1907 The "geneticist" Eugen Fischer uses German
South West Africa as a field site for the
development of later notorious theories on
European racial superiority.
1811 The Warmbad mission station is destroyed by
the Orlam Afrikaners
1891 All the Namaland chiefs are firmly lined up
behind Hendrik Witbooi because no missionary
reports mention any tensions between them.
1840s Namaland undergoes a rapid social change
in the first half of the 18th century, from a
kinship-based, pastoral, self-sufficient society,
to military oligarchies supported by European
missionaries, which are dependent for production
on a destructive trade network of European
traders and hunters.
December- The Colonial Administration moves from
Otjimbingwe to Windhoek.
1904-1906 The resistance struggle culminates in
genocide
1884 The first phase of German colonialism is
characterized by a lack of experience and
improvisation.

Economyoverview This small sub-Saharan economy
is heavily dependent on both commercial and
subsistence agriculture, which provides
employment for more than 60 of the labor force.
Cocoa, coffee, and cotton together generate about
30 of export earnings. Togo is self-sufficient
in basic foodstuffs when harvests are normal,
with occasional regional supply difficulties. In
the industrial sector, phosphate mining is by far
the most important activity, although it has
suffered from the collapse of world phosphate
prices and increased foreign competition. Togo
serves as a regional commercial and trade center.

Brief History
HISTORY The Ewes moved into Togo from the Niger
River valley between the 12th and 14th centuries.
During the 15th and 16th centuries, Portuguese
explorers and traders visited the coast. For the
next 200 years, the coastal region was a major
raiding center for Europeans who were searching
for slaves to obtain, earning Togo and the
surrounding region the name "The Slave Coast."
In an 1884 treaty signed at Togoville, Germany
declared a protectorate over a stretch of
territory along the coast and gradually extended
its control inland. Germany's only self-
supporting colony, Togoland was known as its
model possession. In 1914, Togoland was invaded
by French and British forces and fell after brief
resistance. Following the war, Togoland became a
League of Nations mandate divided for
administrative purposes between France and the
United Kingdom.
