16Criteria for Successful Completion of the HSTA
Program
Students must 1. Have the required semester
HSTA GPA 2. Maintain 70 attendance at club
meetings 3. Complete 75 hours of documented
community service 4. Present a yearly project at
the HSTA Symposium 5. Attend yearly campus-based
HSTA Summer Institutes 6. Have no major
discipline problems 7. Complete a HSTA Waiver

17Noteworthy Outcomes
Since HSTAs inception in 1994
- The West Virginia State Legislature passed,
unanimously, WV HB 2786 in April, 1997, which
allows West Virginia State Colleges and
Universities to provide tuition or fee waivers to
students who successfully complete HSTA. - The West Virginia State Legislature created a
1,100,000/year line in the state budget. - Attitudes toward Math and Science among the HSTA
students show a much more positive trend than the
general population. - HSTA students feel more interested in health
careers because of HSTA. - HSTA teachers feel HSTA students interests in
health careers is increased through HSTA
activities.
18Additional Outcomes
- HSTA students say HSTA is a major reason they are
going to college. - Percentage of HSTA graduates to enter college -
96 - Average high school GPA of graduates is 3.57
- First HSTA class to graduate college - Spring
2002 - All successful HSTA students are eligible for
HSTA waivers towards bachelors, masters, and
