• The start of the Cold war was a frightening time.
• People believed there were communists everywhere
  lurking.
• Nobody could be trusted!
• Today we will learn about that time and how our
  country got through it.

Paranoia

• Paranoia - An excessive anxiety or fear
  concerning one's own well-being which is
  considered irrational and excessive.

House Un-American Activities Committee(HUAC)

• HUAC Established to investigate communist
  infiltration of government agencies especially
  Hollywood.

Hollywood 10

• HUAC famous question Are you now or have you
  ever been a member of the Communist party?
• Hollywood 10 Ten celebrities who were given
  jail time from the HUAC investigation.

Blacklist

• Blacklist A list of people who employers agreed
  not to hire.

Joseph McCarthy

• Joseph McCarthy Senator who rose to power by
  saying he knew of 205 communists in the State
  department.
• When he was further examined further McCarthy
  usually had no evidence to back up his
  accusations and eventually fell from power.

The Rosenbergs

• The Rosenbergs - A married couple who were
  accused of passing atomic threats. After a
  controversial trial they were convicted of
  espionage and executed.

Domino Theory

• Domino Theory The belief that if one country
  fell to communists, its neighbors would soon
  follow.

Vietnam

• In Eastern Asia North Vietnam (a French colony)
  fell to communism under Ho Chi Minh.
• France sent its troops to fight and reassert its
  authority.
• After a major defeat France withdrew its forces.
• Like Korea Vietnam was divided into communist
  North and anti-Communist South.

• After WW2 the U.N. creates two states in the
  Middle East One Jewish and one Arab.
• Within Israel conflict erupts between the Jewish
  and Arab neighbors over Israel.
• While the U.S. supported Israel The Soviet
  Union supported the Arab nations.

• In Cuba Fidel Castro overthrows a corrupt
  dictator named Fulgencio Batista.
• A communist government is implemented in Cuba
  merely 90 miles from the U.S.

• Arms Race The struggle of nations to gain
  weapons superiority.

Nuclear Arsenal Growth

• Both nations arsenals grow steadily.
• Between 1954 and 1958 the U.S. conducted 19
  hydrogen bomb tests at Bikini island in the
  Pacific.
• In March 1954 the power of the bomb dropped was
  750 times more powerful then the one dropped on
  Nagasaki.
• An island 200 miles away had to be evacuated.

Sputnik

• Sputnik The Soviet Union sends into space the
  first artificial satellite to orbit the earth.

U-2 Incident

• U-2 incident An American spy plane flown more
  then 15 miles above the USSR is shot down by
  missiles.
• The spy Gary Powers is captured by the Soviet
  Union.
• Powers is allowed to return home after he is
  traded for a Soviet spy.
