  • People believed there were communists everywhere
    lurking.
  • Nobody could be trusted!
  • Today we will learn about that time and how our
    country got through it.

  • Paranoia - An excessive anxiety or fear
    concerning one's own well-being which is
    considered irrational and excessive.

  • HUAC Established to investigate communist
    infiltration of government agencies especially
    Hollywood.

    ever been a member of the Communist party?

  • Joseph McCarthy Senator who rose to power by
    saying he knew of 205 communists in the State
    department.
  • When he was further examined further McCarthy
    usually had no evidence to back up his
    accusations and eventually fell from power.

  • Between 1954 and 1958 the U.S. conducted 19
    hydrogen bomb tests at Bikini island in the
    Pacific.
  • In March 1954 the power of the bomb dropped was
    750 times more powerful then the one dropped on
    Nagasaki.
  • An island 200 miles away had to be evacuated.

  • Sputnik The Soviet Union sends into space the
    first artificial satellite to orbit the earth.

  • U-2 incident An American spy plane flown more
    then 15 miles above the USSR is shot down by
    missiles.
  • The spy Gary Powers is captured by the Soviet
    Union.
  • Powers is allowed to return home after he is
    traded for a Soviet spy.
