better. PARTNERSHIPS are essential because the
challenges before us are too great to solve
alone. - When we say UNICEF does this, we always mean
that we have done it together with others. - Who do we work with to build a world fit for
every child? - - Governments.
- - Non-governmental organizations

9A ROLE THAT ONLY SPORTS CAN PLAY
10But, what is SPORT? all forms of physical
activity that contribute to physical fitness,
mental wellbeing and social interaction, such as
play, recreation, organized or competitive sport,
and indigenous sports and games. Access to
sport and recreational activity has long been
recognized as a fundamental right. The right of
children, in particular, to engage in sport,
play, physical education, and recreational
activity, is an integral component of the
international human rights framework. Sport
for Development and Peace Towards Achieving the
Millennium Development Goals. UN Inter-Agency

attract and positively change attitudes and
believes.
13EXAMPLES
14UNICEFs partnerships with the world of sport are
based on recognition of the undeniable power of
sport to connect with children and adults
throughout the world. UNICEF works closely with
national and international sport federations,
sport organizations, non-governmental
associations and the media to support childrens
right to play, to deliver important messages,
mobilize communities and, most important, ensure
the long-term development of children, families
and communities.
15- Development from early childhood happens not only
in the classroom, but sports play a vital role. - Special initiatives such as Sports-in-a-Box for
countries affected by conflict
16Unite for Children  Unite for Peace
- Campaign with FIFA launched to ensure that every
child has the right to a peaceful world, free
from conflict and abuse - Since 1999, the partnership between UNICEF and
FIFA has functioned very much the same way.
Anticipating the tremendous benefits football can
have on the development of children, the two
organizations have teamed up over the last years,
using the worlds most popular sport to prevent
children from being recruited as child soldiers,
inform them about the dangers of HIV/AIDS through
education and discussion, and promote educations
for girls, among many other objectives. - The goal of the campaign is to demonstrate how
footballers can serve as role models, and how the
game of football is one of the most powerful ways
through which the world can receive messages of
non-violence, tolerance and peace.
17FCB - UNICEF

unite to promote quality education for all
- UNICEF and the Confederation of African Football
(CAF) have united in a joint campaign to harness
the power of football during the Africa Cup of
Nations, GHANA 2008Â Africas biggest
international football competition. The campaign
seeks to promote quality education for all of
Africas children. - During the high-profile games, UNICEF and CAF
promoted the achievement of two Goals achieving
universal primary school education and promoting
gender equality and empowering women.
19Goodwill Ambassadors
- Sport gives us heroes to admire and positive role
models who inspire young people to overcome the
odds and aim high for success. At the global and
national level, UNICEF counts many former
Olympians, world champions, athletes and other
sports personalities among its Goodwill
Ambassadors, including soccer greats David
Beckham, Marcel Desailly and Francesco Totti - These champions, and many others, bring to the
attention of the world the needs of children both
in their own countries and abroad by visiting
field projects and emergency programmes. They
make direct appeals to those with power to effect
change and use their talents and fame to raise
funds and advocate for the rights of children.
