NP
The earth rotates on its axis, which extends
through the North and South Pole.

4
The equator is the natural waist or middle line
that separates the earth into two halves, the
north and south hemispheres (hemi half).

NP
The angle between the equator and the axis is a
right angle, or 90 degrees.
900
This means there are 90 degrees of latitude
between the equator and the North (or obviously)
South Pole.

NP - 900
To make things easier, we divide the earth into
two hemispheres, and measure latitude north and
south of the equator. The equator, therefore, is
0 degrees latitude and the poles are 90 degrees
of latitude. All places in between have a
latitude measured by the angular distance from
the equator.

NP - 900
Toronto is about half way between the equator and
the North Pole. Its latitude is approximately
44 degrees North.

Longitude is harder to visualize.
There is no natural line like the equator to
start measuring from. Because there was an
observatory at Greenwich, England (and because
England was the most powerful nation at the time
1886), it was agreed by all countries that the
first line, or meridian, of longitude would be
through Greenwich. This is the Prime Meridian and
is 0 degrees.

9
Imagine you are looking down on the top earth at
the North Pole.
The Prime Meridian stretches to the South Pole.
NP
Longitude is measured east
and west .
of the Prime Meridian.
10
Toronto is west of the Prime Meridian.
The angular distance between the Prime Meridian
and meridian Toronto is on is approximately 72
degrees.
720
NP
Torontos longitude is, therefore, approximately
72 degrees west.
