Title: Bell Ringers

1
Bell Ringers
  • The chart shows the population of four states.
    Round the populations
  • to the nearest million then estimate the
    difference between the
  • greatest and least population.

One More Bell Ringer!
Mrs. French was creating candy bags as stocking
stuffers for her relatives. She had 160 mini
candies to put into 12 bags. How many candies
did each person get? Were there any leftovers
for Mrs. French to eat herself? If so, how many?
160 / 12 13 r 4
Ways to divide 1. Traditional algorithm 2.
Think 12 x 12 144 12 156 4 160
I used 13 twelves with 4 leftover (13 r 4)
Yes! Mrs. French ate the 4 leftovers! Then did
the chocolate dance!

Objective 16
Create equivalent fractions and compare and
order fractions.
4
COMPARING FRACTIONS I
Its easy to compare two fractions like 1/3 and
2/3 because they have the same denominators.
But what about fractions with different
denominators? You can use area models to
compare the value of fractions. EXAMPLE

COMPARING FRACTIONS III
You can use common denominators to compare
fractions. EXAMPLE
Which is greater? Use the LCM to make
equivalent fractions with like denominators.

Practice
Mrs. Frenchs problems Your problems
  • 1. Shade ¾ of the first grid and 5/6 of the
    second.
  • 2. Use a symbol to show which is greater, ¾ or
    5/6.
  • Write the fractions, ½, 2/3, and ¾ on a number
    line to show the order.
  • 4. Determine which is greater by making
  • equivalent fractions with common denominators
    2/5 and 3/10
  • 1. Shade 2/5 of the first grid and 1/6 of the
    second.
  • 2. Use a symbol to show which is greater, 2/5 or
    1/6.
  • Write the fractions, ½, 1/3, and ¼ on a number
    line to show the order.
  • 4. Determine which is greater by making
