Definition
  • Diabetes- a chronic disease that affects the way
    body cells convert food into energy.

Description
  • Glucose- energy source for cells from foods
  • Insulin- hormone that helps glucose enter body
    cells
  • The pancreas produces too little or no insulin or
    the insulin is not used properly in the body
  • If cells do not get glucose, they starve and
    cant function.
  • Glucose builds up in blood and produces problems
    if not controlled.

  • Type 1

  • Diagnosed in children
  • No insulin produced
  • Cause unknown
  • Immune system destroys pancreatic cells
  • Need daily insulin through pump or injection,
    monitor diet, exercise
  • Type 2
  • 90-95 of cases
  • Often appears after 40, but now younger
  • Little insulin produced or not used properly
  • Obesity increases risk
  • Treatment includes weight management, exercise,
    monitor diet, insulin may be needed

  • Sudden vision changes
  • Tingling in hands or feet
