What was it??????
  • The HBC was founded in 1670
  • After Pierre Radission and Médart Groseillers
    successful journey to the wilderness region
    beyond New France.
  • A very BIG competition to the NWC
  • They were mainly located
  • around the Hudson Bay and
  • extended to the middle of todays
  • British Columbia, Inside Rupert's
  • Land.
  • The HBC received its Royal
  • Charter from the king, which gave it
  • exclusive trading rights.

  • They merged with the NWC in 1821 due to financial
    problems with both companies.
  • The HBC forbade its employees to get married
    because they believed that they would have to
    support more dependents.
  • The employees were
  • salary paid.

  • Located around the Hudson Bay
  • King Charles II claimed the area around the
    Hudsons Bay and named it after his cousin Prince
    Rupert
  • They had their trading posts at the mouths of the
    rivers emptying into the Hudsons Bay
  • This encouraged the Assiniboin, Cree and Ojibwa
    trappers and traders to bring their furs
  • The Bay also was frozen for most of the winter

  • They traded animal furs, Beaver being their main
  • Any fur brought to trade was compared to the
    Beaver, and this was how the value was determined
  • Their standards were very strict, so there was no
    bargaining
  • 1763, they started to hand out blankets that had
    diseases in them
  • They did this to wipe out the Native Communities

  • 1810- the Metis community thrives in the Red
    River Valley from the NWC
  • 1814- the Pemmican Proclamation was put in place,
    which disabled the Metis from making profit
  • 1821- the HBC and NWC
  • merge into one company called
  • the Hudson Bay Company
