The Summer Slide
  • A quality summer school program can help
    struggling students improve their performance
    significantly and avoid failure.
  • On average, students lose at least one month of
    learning during the summer.
  • Students lose ground in both reading and math,
    but the loss typically is greater in math.

  • In our efforts to help all students succeed, as a
  • school division, we must ensure that summer
    school
  • Employs teachers who have demonstrated proven
    success in helping struggling students, and who
    have implemented effective research - based
    strategies that work in the classroom.
  • Is an integral part of a year-round program of
    extra time and extra help.
  • Is available for failing students.
  • Responds to individual needs through the use of
    innovative and creative teaching strategies.
  • Puts priority on student mastery of reading and
    math skills.

Elementary Summer SchoolKey Focus
  • Promotion - A minimum grade average of (55-68)
    in Reading or Math. (Targeted students in grades
    2-5.)
  • Remediation Offered to students receiving a D
    average ( 69-74) and need skill reinforcement in
    Reading and/or Mathematics. (Targeted grades 2-5)
  • SOL Preparation/Enrichment Offered to students
    who fail the English or Math SOL Test with a
    score range of 375 to 399. (Targeted Grades 3-5)
  • ESL This session would place emphasis on
    English Language development through review and
    reinforcement. Offered to students who have
    completed the first grade. Referral by ESL
    Teacher is required.

  • What does the data say about the current reality?
  • Implementing summer school at the secondary level
    has become a budgetary issue. At the secondary
    level, summer school cost the division
    approximately 371,700.00 for the 2006-2007
    school year.
  • Student data indicate large percentages of
    students attending summer school were not
    successful.

  • Option I Summer School for Earned Credit
  • Establish criteria for attending summer school.
  • Develop application process for students who need
    to earn Carnegie Units or Verified Credits
    through attending summer school.
  • Establish a minimum grade average for attending
    summer school. (55 Average)
  • Students will pay a fee of 200.00 per course for
    attending summer school for credit. ( New courses
    and repeat courses)
  • Collaborate with John Tyler Community College to
    offer courses for Dual Enrollment Credit to
    eligible students seeking an Advance Studies
    Diploma.

    SOL Tests and earn Verified Credit
  • Offer a two week window for remediation to
    prepare for the SOL Expedited Testing and earn
    Verified Credits.

  • 1. Remediation aligned with Work Keys
  • 2. Administer the Work Keys Test
  • (Alternative Test for Verified Credits)
  • 3. Identify rising seniors for early
    intervention

    Students.
  • Offer enrichment opportunities and experiences to
    enable our students in becoming life-long
    learners.
