The Far West

• Fighting in Arkansas, Missouri, Texas coast New
  Mexico.
• Confederates tried to take Missouri.
• The Battle of Pea Ridge northwestern Arkansas.
• American Indians (Cherokee) fought with the
  Confederates.

• Some Indians were slaveholders hoped the South
  would give them greater independence.
• Union outnumbered, but won.
• Pro-confederate units remained active in the
  region so had to leave troops in the area.
