ALASKA

• Sec. William Seward purchased Alaska from Russia
  for 7.2 million
• People poked fun calling it Sewards Icebox and
  Sewards Folly
• Alaska is now considered invaluable due to oil
  resources

HAWAII

• In 1891, Queen Liliuokalani was overthrown by
  American interests
• In 1898, Pres. McKinley declared its annexation
• Hawaii was valuable due to its sugar, location,
  and now tourism

Spanish-American War

• The U.S. has always had an interest in Cuba.
• Cuba rebelled against Spain causing Gen. Weyler
  to place Cubans in concentration camps
• Yellow Journalism exaggerated Weyler as a butcher

• The USS Maine, stationed in Havana Harbor,

Battles in the Pacific

• The first battles occurred in the Philippines,
  led by US Gen. George Dewey
• Dewey quickly seized Manila in a matter of hours
• Philippine rebels joined the US against Spanish
  troops

THE ROUGH RIDERS

• In 1898, 17,000 US troops including TRs Rough
  Riders invaded Cuba
• The US acquired Cuba, Guam, Puerto Rico, and the
  Philippines

• Pancho Villa and Emiliano Zapata led a revolt
  against the Mexican government
• After Villa attacked Columbus, NM, Pres. Wilson
  sent US troops into Mexico to capture him
