  • Sec. William Seward purchased Alaska from Russia
    for 7.2 million
  • People poked fun calling it Sewards Icebox and
    Sewards Folly
  • Alaska is now considered invaluable due to oil
    resources

  • In 1891, Queen Liliuokalani was overthrown by
    American interests
  • In 1898, Pres. McKinley declared its annexation
  • Hawaii was valuable due to its sugar, location,
    and now tourism
