Rule of Thumb for Video Editing
  • Dont string together scenes in which the camera
is moving. Pans, zooms, and other moving shots
should always be separated by static shots.
  • Shots that follow one another should be from
different camera positions. It should vary by at
    least 45 degrees.

6
Titles
  • Titles should be informative, describe the
contents of the movie and gain audience interest.
  • Titles should be short, and in large, legible
    font.
  • Title colors should be easy read Good
    background/text combinations are white/red,
    yellow/black, white/green.

7
Titles (Continued)
  • Titles should be on screen long enough to read
    through it twice.
  • Allow about 3 seconds of onscreen time for a
    title with ten letters.
  • Natural titles, such as street signs, or title
pages of newspapers create interesting titles.

8
Lighting
  • Hard and Soft Light
  • White balance
  • Shooting outside

9
Hard and Soft Light
  • Hard Light-refers to the light produced by a
direct source which creates shadows with clearly
defined edges. Hard light is usually bright like
    the sun at midday.
  • Soft Light-refers to light that isnt as direct,
and produces shadows that are blurred at the
edges or fade away. This light would be filtered
light or natural means such as fog, clouds, shade.

10
White Balance
  • White light is a combination of all the colors of
the spectrum, as youve seen in a rainbow.
  • While videotaping, light is not always white due
to the a lot of factors.
  • Your camcorder automatically adjusts to
compensate for this color temperature of the
light by setting the white balance.

11
Shooting Outdoors
  • Avoid shooting in the middle of the day.
  • Clouds are your friends, great diffuser of
    sunlight.
  • Shade is also good, the shade of a tree or side
    of a building.
  • Maximize natural light, shoot early or late in
    the day.

  • Videotape extra footage before and after scenes.
  • Teach students as much as possible, but take the
time to learn from them as well.
