Title: CUTPAPER MOLAS

1
CUT-PAPER MOLAS
  • BASED ON CLOTH MOLAS
  • PRODUCED BY THE
  • CUNA INDIANS

2
CLOTH MOLAS
  • Are made by the Cuna Indians of the San Blas
Islands. (Near the Northeastentrance to the
Panama Canal on the Northern Coast of South
    America)
  • They are Americans

3
Mola Characteristics
  • Molas are Extremely Colorful (3-7 colors may be
    used)
  • Usually Tropical subject matter is used (birds,
    fish, insects, leaves, and flowers)
  • Geometric and abstract patterns are combined with
    the main subject
  • Large Simplified Shapes are used.

4
Mola Characteristics cont.
  • A concentric or HALO effect around forms is used
  • Negative space is broken up with vertical,
horizontal or diagonal strips of color or with
    smaller related natural forms

5
Considerations
  • Molas need to show balance---either symmetrical
    or asymmetrical
  • They also should show BALANCE, UNITY, HARMONY,
AND RHYTHM should be shown. This can be
accomplished through REPETITION of objects and/or
    designs
  • You need a CENTER OF INTEREST too!

6
CRAFTSMANSHIP
  • Craftsmanship is VERY important!
  • You will need to do some advance planning. This
means you need to make some sketches and choose
the best design. Then you need to choose your
    colors!
  • You will need to cut with clean, neat edges!
  • You will need to glue neatly and cleanly!
